All men and women are called to holliness, to 'perfection', sharing in the life of Christ. Some are called to live this holiness in communities, sharing their lives together and bound by vows. This community life and the traditional vows of celibacy, poverty and obedience are examined by the author in the light of the Bible's call to every man to holiness in Christ. He eaxamines the well-known biblical 'proof texts' for the Religious Life, and radically reinterprets them in a way faithful to biblical scholarship.
